This 6 week 12 hour workshop for parents of children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms presents practical solutions to day-to-day behavior management problems from homework completion, complying with rules and requests, to talking back. Parents are offered positive methods for improving children’s and teen’s behavior so that the use of punishment is drastically reduced. Our research on more than a thousand children and adolescents shows that not only are ADHD/ADD symptoms greatly improved, but self esteem for parents and their children is greatly enhanced. Parents consistently rate this approach above or equal to medication in effectiveness. Long-term outcome studies find that without such treatment, ADHD children do not fare very well. Practitioners report that parent training in behavior modification is the second most recommended therapy for ADHD (medication is first).

Two Sundays ago On Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Ty talked about the time when he was 10 that he, his brother and I were involved in a head-on collision. I broke both bones in my leg and all my ribs putting on brakes. Ty instantly remembered his scouting training and was able to staunch the bleeding while his brother ran to use a phone to call 911. That ability to think and act well under pressure comes often to people under such circumstances. I hadn’t thought of that event for many years – the time my kids saved my life. I am filled with gratitude for all the times my sons and the rest of my family and friends have been there for me in times of need. None of us can do this alone. On this love spring day with all the tress and plants blooming I am filled with joy and gratitude for every act of kindness. I’m wondering what I can do today to pay those acts forward. Sometimes it’s just a smile or words of encouragement. So many times my patients are very discouraged. They need much encouragement and reminders that we all have the ability to tackle tough problems if we only take the first step.
